Stallions Name Steven Freer, Pitching Coach, for the 2017 Campaign

Saugertiesm NY – After the announcement of Saugerties resident, Tom Whitaker, being named Head Coach of the Saugerties Stallions; Whitaker took very little time to name his Pitching Coach in former Saugerties High School standout, Steven Freer.

Most recently, Freer served as the Head Coach at Ulster County Community College. Freer was assistant/pitching coach, at UCCC, from 1991 to 1994 under then head coach Dennis Sheehan, when the team earned its first appearance in the National Junior College Atlhetic Association’s (NJCAA) World Series and recorded one of the most winning records in its history.

Freer brings experience as a former coach at every level from Little League and Camp Ulster programs to college, and was a top high school and college athlete. On the mound, he led Saugerties High School to its 1985 State Class B Championship and was recognized as “Player of the Year” by the TImes Herald Record, Daily Freeman, and Poughkeepsie Journal. Freer was selected First Team, All State in 1985 by the New York State Sportswriters’ Association.

After graduating Saugerties High School in 1985, he played college baseball at St. John’s University and was a member of the 1988 Big East Champions. He graduated in 1990 but injuries prevented him from pursuing a profressional career.

Freer will enter his first season as Saugerties Stallions Pitching Coach with 19 pitchers from various D1 programs across the country. His main goal is to maintain the health of each pitcher while having constant contact with their college coaches to ensure these measures are being followed.

We look forward to having Steven Freer join the Saugerties Stallion’s organization, and cannot wait for the season!
